Water Projects in Honduras

Honduras is regularly listed among the five poorest countries in the West. Upwards of 50,000 children under the age of 5 die each year in Honduras from preventable water contamination, and up to a million more people suffer from water-related sickness. In 2006, CenterPoint partnered with Living Water 4 Roatan, Clinica Esperanza, and Calvary Church Roatan to provide clean water for the community of Sandy Bay on the island of Roatan. The project included drilling a well for the local health clinic, installing a water purification unit, and laying over 1,200 feet of plumbing through the community. The video below shows a few highlights from this amazing trip.

This past August we returned to Honduras and helped install a new well in one of the poorest areas of Roatan known as “La Colonia” – a community of about 3,000 people living in shanty homes on an interior hillside. About half of the community is children under the age of 18, and about half of the adults are unemployed. People living in the the Colonia receive water about once a week, and this water is typically stored in containers to be used throughout the week ahead. Because of this inadequate system, about 90% of the health issues treated by Clinica Esperanza are related to unclean water. The new well doubled the water output for the Colonia, delivering water once every four days instead of once every eight.

The need in Roatan is tremendous, and we continue to remain in touch with our friends in the Sandy Bay area. Our hope is to return again as the Lord leads, serving the Colonia and beyond in both word and deed.

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
